A place to linger

Roč is a strong choice when you want a visit to reveal something beyond a beautiful skyline. Its churches, inscriptions and printing heritage place language at the centre of the walk. Slow down at the small details rather than treating it as a quick prelude to Hum.

The connection with Hum is meaningful: the Glagolitic Alley links the two places through commemorative monuments. Decide whether you want a short town visit or a longer cultural outing; they require different amounts of time and preparation.

Is this your kind of town?

Choose Roč for Glagolitic culture and a more focused alternative to collecting viewpoints. A pre-arranged heritage visit can become the centre of the day. Hum is the natural continuation; Buzet provides another historic layer. Avoid scheduling all three as brief photo stops if you want time for inscriptions, churches and lunch.

Map directions connect the named places; they are not a surveyed walking trail or an accessibility assessment. Follow local signs and public access.

A walk through the details

Suggested sequence, not a measured or waymarked route. Adapt it to access, weather and opening times.

  1. 01

    The large gate

Enter through the historic approach and orient yourself within the walled settlement. The Buzet Tourist Board provides a dedicated map of Roč’s sights.

  2. 02

    St Anthony and St Roch

Make the churches your cultural focus. St Anthony is associated with the Glagolitic Abecedarium; St Roch preserves frescoes. Ask about interior access in advance.

  3. 03

    St Bartholomew

Continue to the parish church. If you want to see the replica Glagolitic printing press, arrange a visit separately through the local heritage contact.

Arrival & parking

Roč lies east of Buzet. Navigate to the historic hilltop settlement and follow local parking signs; a railway station or general area pin is not the town entrance.

Walking & access

Allow for slopes, old paving and church thresholds. Confirm the specific route rather than assuming that a short visit is step-free.

Before you set out

Book access to the printing-press replica or a heritage activity ahead. Add Hum only if you have enough time for both towns and the transfer.
